The Trilemma
The Trilemma- lord, liar or lunatic
Jesus, is Jesus our lord and savior, a liar or just a crazed lunatic? The Trilemma is the debate between these three assumptions of a single man. Christians believe in Jesus as our savior, to other religions, such as the Jews and Muslims, he is just more of a prophet but somewhat of a liar for claiming to be the son of God, while more scientific minded people, such as CS Lewis and Napoleon, think that he was just a crazy lunatic. In C.S. Lewis’ quote she said that he was a ‘great moral teacher’ but ‘merely a man’ and either a ‘lunatic’ or the ‘Devil of Hell’. She stated that his attempt on the cross to save man was a lie and thought it was just suicide. Some people called him a liar, stating he is the one and only son of God and is lying and making himself a hypocrite. The Jews never believed in Jesus as the Son of God, they felt offended for a single man to say such a divine title and crucify him for lying and crazy. In the bible, it states that God will bring a savior (Psalms 1:23), the messiah, so there is a possibility that Jesus was the one. Jesus lived in a common family with no reputation so know one would believe in that he is the Messiah. He wasn’t rich, he had to work to make money but instead share morals in his life. Why didn’t he work to make money? It is because he had a special job on Earth to fulfill. He attracted the most uncommon people to be his disciples. According to the documentary on BBC about Jesus, he had dinner with tax collectors, prostitutes, and thief’s to share the good news. No ordinary priest would try this; this made Jesus more than just a regular moral teacher. He thought all people to be equal. He wasn’t corrupted, selfish or lavish-lived. When he said to give the money to poor, he could of ask them to give the money to Jesus but didn’t. He wasn’t paid for what he did; he did it because it was his job on Earth. Jesus was more than a moral teacher, he was also a prophet. If Jesus was the Demon from Hell, why did he heal the blind man, or saved the ear of one the Roman soldier who was going to crucify him. He wasn’t a hypocrite; he showed that you should love even your enemies in this scene. He was able to walk on water, and care for the sick. Can Satan do that? Jesus wasn’t a lie; the Jewish priests gave him a chance to take back what he said about him being the son of God and be spared from crucifixion but instead didn’t because it was the truth. He didn’t die as a punishment that could be prevented by saying he lied, he did it because it was the truth. No crazy lunatic would die for proclaiming that with a chance to take it back with the punishment suspended. It shows that he is the total opposite of what CS Lewis said. If Jesus can rise from the dead three days after his crucifixion and walk, he wasn’t merely a man; he was the son of God. No other prophets or saints in the bible was able to that, he was more than just a prophet. So I honestly say that he is my Lord, the Messiah, and the One we call the son of God.
